How to dress for a Midsummer Night’s Dream costume party

The Shakespearean comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream was written in the late 1500’s and originally set in Athens. You could take inspiration from there and start with Greek style clothing or costumes.

Alternatively you could go as someone from one of the three distinct character groups featured in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Fairies, The Lovers (The Mortals) and The Mechanicals (The Rustics). Midsummer Night’s Dream costume inspiration can be taken from any one of the characters within each of the groups.

The Fairies

Titania is the Queen of the Fairies, Oberon is the King of the Fairies and Puck is Oberon’s right hand man. Cobweb, Peaseblossom, Mustardseed & Moth are the somewhat lesser known fairies.

Dress in your favourite Fairy gear. Obviously Titania and Oberon are the more elaborate of the group, with Titania often favouring white, green, gold & sometimes lavender, Oberon is usually depicted in green complete with leaves, twig like crown and a cape or cloak. Puck is almost always wearing green, sometimes shirtless and often wearing britches or a leaf style skirt along with his trademark horns.

The Lovers

The lovers are Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius and Helena they are the human or mortal characters of the story. Their lives have been turned upside down in the middle of the night by the fairies. Each of the characters has some kind of relationship problem and the humour of the play comes from when the fairies try to fix the lovers problems.

The lovers are humans from ancient Athens, so these are the characters where you take your inspiration for Midsummer Night’s Dream costumes from historical Greek or Roman costumes.

The Mechanicals

The Mechanicals are a group six of skilled tradespeople who come together in A Midsummer Night’s Dream to perform a somewhat amateurish play within a play. The group consists of Quince, the carpenter; Snug, the joiner; Bottom, the weaver; Flute, the bellows-mender; Snout, the tinker; and Starveling the tailor. They are often referred to as the Rude Mechanicals, a name coined by Puck in reference to their working class professions.

Pyramus and Thisbe is to be performed for Athenian Royalty at the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. The mechanicals attempt to act out Ovid’s original version of Pyramus and Thisbe, a tragic love story. Ultimately they fail due to their ignorance and misinterpretation of it. It is this failure that ironically contributes to the comedic success of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Costumes for the Mechanicals could have hints of each characters profession, keeping in mind that they are all working class. Your costume should include natural fibres, earthy toned colours, waistcoats and britches. One of the most distinctive characters is Nick Bottom, due to Puck using his fairy magic to give him the head of an ass.

Why shopping local matters

6 reasons to shop small, local and in Australia

  • Local employment
  • Money remains in the Australian economy
  • Shopping centres remain open and vibrant
  • Passionate/knowledgeable small business owners
  • Competition for the big guys
  • Product variety

At the risk of stating the very obvious, local businesses provide local employment. The number of people a local business supports goes far beyond store employees. It extends to their wholesale suppliers, packaging manufacturers, technical support & maintenance providers just to name a few.

Local businesses support our economy by paying tax here in Australia and collecting GST. Their employees pay tax and they receive compulsory superannuation to go towards their retirement. In contrast, when we buy from overseas companies, the money leaves our economy entirely.

We have all seen empty shops. Strips of poorly maintained, local shops become untidy and the services that used to be close by no longer exist. Without anchor businesses that draw customers to a centre, the surrounding businesses also suffer. Imagine if all the businesses around your favourite coffee shop closed, do you think the coffee shop would survive?

The passion and expertise of local & small business owners shouldn’t be underestimated, they are the ones that will tell you how to use an item or offer recommendations based on their unique experience and knowledge. With a different business model from the big guys, where profit and sales volume are the overriding values, small local businesses will often stock items that big business are not interested in stocking. Small businesses offer alternatives, variety and provide competition. There is no point in complaining about the duopoly if you haven’t supported their competition. Small business pricing is often way more competitive than you expect, due to the relationships that they have developed with their suppliers.

Shopping locally is a no brainer when it comes to supporting our economy. Whether you are shopping on line or in store, don’t overlook the benefits of dealing with an Australian business. Whilst it is true that the items may still be made overseas, spending your money locally helps keep it circulating within our economy, rather than sending it offshore for good.

How to tell if a business is located in Australia

Check their contact details – is it an Australian phone number or address?

Check their shipping details – things like what shipping company they use and shipping times are some of the biggest clues to their location.

Just because a business has a .au website or has the word Australia in their name doesn’t mean they are located here!

If you need a costume and are lucky enough to live near Carlingford, Sydney we would love to see you in store at Acting the Part.

For those of you who need costumes but can’t get to our store, Smiffy’s Australia are an online costume business located here. If you would like a recommendation for a local physical store near you we may be able to recommend someone.

Take a look around your local community, you may be surprised at what is on offer. Let’s normalise shopping local before shopping overseas.

Winter Theme Costumes

Image is of a selection of Winter theme costume ideas

Attending a dress up party is fun, however dressing in a full bear suit in summer is extremely unpleasant. Likewise wearing a Hawaiian shirt and grass skirt in Winter is wrong for so many reasons.

Asking your guests to wear something that is uncomfortable is a sure fire way to get them to skip the dressing up or maybe even skip the festivities altogether. So what themes work for Wintertime costume parties?

Animals & creatures

Christmas in July

Elizabethan

Frozen

Game of Thrones

Lord of The Rings

Medieval

Movies and Television

Star Wars

Steampunk

Vikings & Barbarians

Winter Wonderland

These are all themes that give you plenty of options to keep warm. Many of the costumes for these themes include capes, cloaks, heavier fabrics and characters with long sleeves to stop you from having a cold night out.

Our favourite Wintertime party drink is Mulled Wine. Nothing to do with costumes but we thought we would share the recipe anyway 🙂

4 litre cask of red wine (nothing too flash or cheap, just something almost drinkable)
1 orange studded with cloves and sliced into 8 segments
1 red apple sliced into 8 segments
2 cinnamon sticks
200-500 grams of Demerara sugar, start with 150 grams and add more to taste

Place all ingredients into a large saucepan, bring to a slow boil stirring until the sugar dissolves. Leave to simmer for at least an hour for the flavour to develop adjusting the sugar to taste as you go.

Keep warm and serve directly from the pot with a soup ladle.

Keep the lid on most of the time so you don’t loose to0 much through evaporation and top up the wine and the sugar as the night goes on (trust us no one will notice if the flavour changes slightly).

Cruise Ship Dress Up Nights

Costume parties or theme nights are becoming more and more common on cruises. These nights have added a whole other layer of what to pack for a cruise.

Depending upon the cruise line you could find yourself planning for any number of theme nights including Gatsby or 1920’s, White Night, 80’s, 90’s, Disco Glam, Elvis, Pirate Night, Disney or a Not so Scary Halloween theme.

Hit your local costume store before you set sail and pack a simple accessory or a full costume. The choice is yours, it is not essential that you dress in theme but it is a whole lot of fun if you are that way inclined.

For White Night your favourite white dress or a white shirt and white or light coloured chinos will work perfectly. You could add a white gangster hat, mask or feather boa. If you are very keen, like one guest on a recent cruise we were on you could go as a Storm Trooper.

For an 80’s night you can go with a full costume like a fabulous rented 1980’s taffeta dress or you can add some leg warmers to the tights you are planning to wear in the gym during your cruise. Face it there is a good chance you won’t be using them in the gym :). Other easy options include bright tracksuits, a mullet with a flannelette shirt or some short shorts with sweatbands.

Gatsby and 20’s nights are great themes for just adding the right accessories to something you already own or you can rent or purchase a dress. Take a look at the 1920’s page for some inspiration.

Song Title Dress up Ideas

So the theme is “Costumes inspired by a Song Title” or “Dress as a Song Title”, where do you start? Take a look through this list.

Bat Out of Hell, Meat Loaf – Add some devil horns, wings or a pitchfork to a bat costume.

Snowman, Sia – Check out our Snowman costume.

The Joker And The Queen, Taylor Swift – A jester or clown costume and any era of Queen costume would work for this great couple costume idea.

Leader of the pack, The Shangri-Las – A King Card costume would work for this idea.

Tears of a Clown, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles – A Clown suit with plenty of tears incorporated into the face paint.

Alien Superstar, Beyonce – Any space or futuristic outfits with an added blow up guitar or microphone would do the job for this one. Or just be yourself and add some Alien antennas, obviously you have the superstar aspect covered 🙂

Devil with a blue dress on, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels – Add the usual devil accessories to a blue dress.

Eleanor Rigby, The Beatles – A great idea for a couple. Eleanor needs a dowdy 60’s dress and a jar of rice and Father McKenzie wears his priestly garb and carries a sock that he is darning.

Disco Inferno, The Trammps – Grab the best 70’s disco gear you can find and add some flame eye shadow or plenty of gel, with red and yellow hairspray.

A Horse with No Name, America – Bring the song to life in a horse costume with a blank name tag.

Doctor Doctor, The Thompson Twins – Another great one for a couple if two of you dress a Doctors.

Bejeweled, Taylor Swift – Add some large blingy rings to anything shiny or sparkly.

Anti-Hero, Taylor Swift – Deadpool would be perfect for this.

Ghost, Justine Beiber – An old school dress up ghost costume is perfect.

Beauty and a Beat, Justin BeiberPrincess Belle holding a beetroot perhaps. Not quite the right beat but you get the idea.

Maria, Justin Beiber – Possibly the most famous Maria is Julie Andrew’s character from The Sound of Music.

Locked out of Heaven, Bruno Mars – We are pretty sure the Devil would count as someone locked out of Heaven.

Runaway Baby, Bruno Mars – Pop on a baby onesie costume with some running shoes or a numbered racing bib.

Gorilla, Bruno Mars – No explanation needed for this one.

Rich Baby Daddy, Drake – Think a suit or fur coat, plenty of bling, some fake money and a baby doll.

Umbrella, Rihanna – Walk right on in under your “Umberella”.

Roar, Katy Perry – Go dressed as a Lion.

Hot N Cold, Katy Perry – this one is great for a couple, one of you can be the Devil and the other can be a Snowman or a character from Frozen.

Rise, Katy Perry – Jesus perhaps.

E.T, Katy Perry – Go as an Alien.

Barbie World, Nicki Minaj – Dress in your best hot pink gear and carry around a small (or big) globe of the world.

Vampire, Olivia Rodrigo – You need fangs and possibly a cape for this one.

Cool, Dua Lipa – Think The Fonz (the iconic 70’s or 80’s cool TV character from Happy Days) or a Snowman.

7 Rings, Ariana Grande – Get hold of seven over the top rings to wear.

Beauty and the Beast, Ariana Grande – Another one for a couple, dress up as Belle and The Beast.

Some of these are way more obscure than others, many of them will have nothing to do with the actual lyrics, but remember you are dressing as the song title not acting out the lyrics. The possibilities are endless and you can be as obvious or as obscure as you want for a Song Title Theme costume party.
